Graycor Industrial Constructors recently completed a major project at BP’s Whiting Refinery located along the southwestern shore of Lake Michigan in Indiana. The Whiting Refinery is the second largest refinery in the BP refining system and the sixth largest refinery in the U.S. BP is one of the world’s leading international oil and gas companies. Graycor served as general contractor on the Naphtha Integrity Project, a direct project with BP to construct BP’s new Naphtha Splitting Unit.

This facility will replace the existing plant and will provide increased volume and technology enhancements. BP is investing several billion dollars in Northwest Indiana to modernize the Whiting Refinery to enable it to process heavier crudes. Through detailed planning and coordination, Graycor was successful in completing the mechanical and electrical packages of the Naphtha Integrity Project with zero recordable safety incidents. The majority of the project involved piping system installation with the remaining work consisting of structural steel erection, rotating equipment installation, vessel work, fire proofing, insulation and electrical work. Naphtha is a product produced at the refinery and is further processed to produce propane and butane, and contributes to gasoline blending.
