GSL Project Team Gives Food to Region’s Hungry

In just three days, GSL’s project team assigned at NIPSCO’s R.M. Schahfer Generating Station in Wheatfield, Indiana, organized a food drive, collecting non-perishable food that was given to a local food bank in time for last week’s Thanksgiving holiday.

The 44-member team gathered a total of 1,500 food items (from workers who donated food items and monetary contributions that were used to purchase food) and delivered the donation before Thanksgiving Day to the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana, a charity leading the Region’s fight against hunger and distributing more than 4.3 million meals each year to hungry kids, adults and seniors across Lake and Porter counties.

“We had great participation from everyone on our team to give to those in the community who suffer from hunger,” says Jay Beere, Graycor Industrial superintendent and food drive organizer. Besides Graycor Industrial and Sargent and Lundy employees, other participants representing the project team included DLZ Corp., Joliet Steel & Construction, Masterlink, NCI – Nursing Corps, Ozinga Bros. Inc., Patterson Horth, Risch Construction Inc. and Sargent Electric Co.

The environmental project underway at Schahfer Station is being performed by GSL, a partnership between Graycor Industrial Constructors and engineering firm Sargent and Lundy. GSL is engineering, procuring and constructing a system to dispose of coal combustion residuals (CCR) on Units 14 and 15 at the 1,943-megawatt coal-fired power plant. The project, which began last July, is scheduled to reach completion in February 2019.
