Project Scope

Graycor was selected to complete a revitalization project for Hawthorn Mall. The project includes a 90,000-square-foot expansion of Hawthorn Mall consisting of an upper level, 12-screen, state-of-the-art AMC theatre with six restaurants below the theatre. The renovation includes all of the mall’s entrances, the Northeast Concourse, food court and restrooms.

Project challenges included building theatre space over the existing mall with 11 building columns through the roof and upper level slab and landing in the basement of the mall in the back of tenant spaces. For the overbuild columns within the tenant spaces, the 90’ columns were spliced at 25’ to allow erection of the columns at night from within the tenant space to minimize impact. Working closely with the structural engineer, the column locations were selected to minimize the impact on the mall as well as the overall cost to move existing equipment and services.

Another challenge involved building a portion of the upper level over the mall’s food court and JCP loading docks while maintaining truck access during all phases of construction. Extensive coordination with mall operations and JCP allowed for uninterrupted scheduled deliveries and truck access through the work zone.
