Project Scope

In partnership with Sargent & Lundy, Graycor designed, furnished and installed Activated Carbon Injection (ACI) systems for 12 boilers at six Midwest Generation plants throughout Central and Northern Illinois, followed by a project at the power producer’s Pennsylvania plant. In ACI technology, powdered activated carbon sorbent is injected into the flue gas duct where the sorbent binds with the mercury in order to prevent the mercury from being emitted into the atmosphere.

Graycor’s team planned and coordinated retrofitting of the six power plants simultaneously, with each plant being unique and having a varying number of boilers and associated equipment. As a result, the team spent approximately four months designing and planning systems for each plant before construction began. Work, which varied by site, generally included site work, foundations, steel erection, piping, electrical and injection port toe-ins at existing ductwork.
