Project Scope

Graycor completed a major Air Quality Control System (AQCS) project for NIPSCO at its Michigan City Generating Station, a coal-fired electric generating plant now upgraded with air quality equipment to further reduce emissions. The dry flue gas desulfurization (DFGD) project included installation of two Babcock Power-designed baghouses and dry scrubber trains along with all auxiliary and BOP equipment. Scope also included installation of ductwork, modifications of two Howden axial-type ID fans, replacement of existing waste ash silo equipment, a new waste ash silo, all piping, in-line instrumentation, structural steel, siding and HVAC.

Unique aspects of the project included the fabrication area being located approximately 20 miles from the main construction site, which required Graycor’s team to closely coordinate transporting, loading and shipping by barge the assembled components to the construction site. Challenges also included staging and storing materials within a small site which made assembly critical. To help with this, Graycor worked with the Owner’s vendors on constructability of the project as well as delivery of equipment and materials.
