Project Scope

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago chose Graycor to install a new rock crushing facility at their CUP-McCook Reservoir located on the south side of Interstate 55 and the Des Plaines River. The design-build project required Graycor’s team to execute the work in an active mine environment, as well as interact and comply with numerous federal, state and local governing bodies and agencies.

The completed project facilitates construction of a new quarry to become the final reservoir for Chicago’s Deep Tunnel Project. Graycor’s team was also responsible for designing, fabricating and constructing a conveyor system to remove crushed rock located approximately 120 feet below grade in bedrock. The conveyor stretches nearly one mile under I-55 and the river.

Work also included installing an air release structure, sludge lines, a water main and sanitary line, as well as conveyor bent foundation and transfer tower foundations. Office and maintenance building foundations and construction were also included in the work scope.
