Project Scope

Graycor Industrial completed a balance-of-plant installation for two wet flue gas desulfurization (WFGD) units for NIPSCO at its R.M. Schahfer Generating Station in Wheatfield, Indiana. The coal-fired electric generating plant was upgraded with air emissions reduction equipment to further improve the environment. NIPSCO is one of the seven energy distribution companies of NiSource Inc. and is the largest natural gas distribution company and the second largest electric distribution company in the State of Indiana. At peak construction, nearly 900 craftspeople were working at this multi-prime site.

One of the unique elements of the project was the high utilization of Graycor’s state-of-the-art fabrication shop for modularization of components. Graycor was able to provide NIPSCO with this unique solution by fabricating 17 modular pipe racks which ranged upwards of 75 feet in length, weighing 35 tons. In total, the Graycor fabrication shop processed over 15,000 feet of pipe for this AQCS project.

The project also called for Graycor’s team to install SO3 Trona dry sorbent injection (DSI) systems for units 14 and 15.

Graycor also worked with NIPSCO on the AQCS installation at its Bailly Generating Station, located adjacent to the Port of Indiana, and has recently completed AQCS projects for AEP, Alliant Energy, Duke Energy, Midwest Generation and Xcel Energy.
