Graycor is serving as the general contractor for the construction of NIPSCO’s new 400 MW natural gas peaker facility in Wheatfield, Indiana. Developed to strengthen grid reliability, support growing power requirements and facilitate NIPSCO’s transition from coal-fired generation, the project provides flexible generation capacity with the ability to utilize hydrogen and other zero-carbon fuels. Designed by Sargent & Lundy, the facility consists of four combustion turbine generator units, including three GE Vernova LM6000 units and one 7F unit, with heat recovery steam units arranged in two generation blocks.
Graycor’s scope includes site development, underground utilities, balance of plant, centerline construction and installation of major process equipment. The project also includes six support facilities housing electrical, administrative, water treatment, warehouse and gas compression functions, plus cooling towers, auxiliary boilers, natural gas systems, emergency generators and fire pumps, high-voltage equipment and associated infrastructure. Graycor’s self-perform scope includes the balance of plant equipment setting, installation of all four combustion turbines and structural steel erection.
